Pine Ridge Ministry
The Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota is home to the Oglala Sioux Tribe with an estimated population of close to 40,000. The reservation is large, and its needs immense, commensurate with grinding poverty.
A number of years ago, the St. Andrew's Youth Group went on a summer mission trip to the reservation. While on the trip, the group learned that the organizations working to improve conditions for those living on the reservation were craving more consistent support. It was difficult for these organizations to complete the projects they needed and get the donations they needed with groups coming only once.
After that first trip, the St. Andrew's congregation chose to make Pine Ridge a regular ministry of the church. In addition to several large loads of donations being taken to the reservation throughout the year, members of St. Andrew's have traveled to Pine Ridge on a mission trip each summer. Working with organizations we have established relationships with, they are involved with a building project that helps the people of the reservation. They also learn about many of the social and economic problems facing the residents of the reservation.
